The effect of placement of varying numbers of Apis mellifera colonies on the fruit set in apple orchards having different proportions of pollinizers

, : The effect of placement of varying numbers of Apis mellifera colonies on the fruit set in apple orchards having different proportions of pollinizers. Pollination in tropics: Proceedings of the International Symposium on pollination in tropics, August 8-13, 1993, Bangalore, India: 197-201

When honey bee colonies were placed in an apple orchard in which 20% of trees were pollinizers, fruit set one month after petal drop was highest (52.7%) on trees no more than 25 m from the colonies in each direction. Trees further away showed a sharp decline in fruit set. In an orchard with an ideal pollinizer ratio (30%), a small group of colonies in one corner produced a uniformly good crop.
