Uneven development of non-farm enterprises and regional income inequality in rural China

, : Uneven development of non-farm enterprises and regional income inequality in rural China. Discussion Papers Department of Economics, University of Portsmouth ( 50): 34 pp.

One of the most important changes in post-Mao China is the rapid development of rural township and village enterprises (TVEs) which have helped raise rural per caput income significantly since 1979. However, TVEs have not been evenly developed across the country, causing greater regional income inequality which has important economic, political and social implications. This paper develops two new and efficient methods to decompose Gini coefficients by population class and factor incomes.
