A pseudorabies virus mutant with deletions in the latency and early protein O genes: replication, virulence, and immunity in neonatal piglets

, : A pseudorabies virus mutant with deletions in the latency and early protein O genes: replication, virulence, and immunity in neonatal piglets. Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation 8(1): 21-24

The ability of a double mutant of Aujeszky virus (ADV) to replicate and to cause disease in piglets was greatly reduced in comparison with the parent Indiana-Funkhauser virus. At an infection dose (5 x 10superscript 3 PFU/nostril) that caused no clinical signs in 5-day-old piglets, this mutant was capable of eliciting solid protective immunity against a lethal ADV challenge. The results suggest that the double-gene deletion attenuates ADV but does not affect its immunogenicity.
