Effect of feeding complete rations containing maize husk on rumen metabolites of goats

, : Effect of feeding complete rations containing maize husk on rumen metabolites of goats. Indian Journal of Animal Sciences 66(3): 291-295

Four complete rations were formulated incorporating maize husk at 0 (R-1), 10 (R-2), 20 (R)-3) and 40% (R-4) levels and fed ad lib. to 16 mature local (Mahaboobnagari) bucks divided randomly into 4 groups of 4 animals each. Rumen liquor was collected before (0 hr) feeding and at 2, 4 and 6 hr after feeding. Significantly low pH and high TVFA concentrations were observed in R-1 when compared to R-3 and R-4 fed groups. Significantly (P lt 0.01) low pH values at 4 hr and high TVFA values at 2 hr were observed when compared with 0 and 6 hr post-feeding. The concentrations of all rumen nitrogen fractions were at a peak level at 2 hr post-feeding. These results indicated that complete rations of goats can be formulated incorporating maize husk up to 40%.
