Entrenched farm indebtedness and the process of agrarian change: a case study and its implications

, : Entrenched farm indebtedness and the process of agrarian change: a case study and its implications. Globalization and agri food restructuring: perspectives from the Australasia region: 301-322

The chapter deals with the development and consequences of entrenched indebtedness among farmers in eastern Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, in relation to the more general process of agrarian change and to the body of theory which seeks to explain the apparent resistance of family farming to subsumption in to the regular capitalist mode of production. Empirical evidence is presented on the origin, nature and impact of entrenched debt.
