Sugar from sorghum

, : Sugar from sorghum. Kukuruza i Sorgo ( 6): 16-17

When grown in arid regions such as the northern Caucasus, modern cultivars of sorghum can produce up to 4-5.5 t sugars/ha; stalk juice contains 15-17% sucrose + 1.5-2.0% glucose, compared with ~17% + 0.1% for sugarbeet or 12% + 0.5% for sugarcane juice. Tests on increasing the sugar yield of sorghum were performed in 1993-94, in the Zernograd district of the Rostov region of Russia.
