This book provides coverage of all the palms found on the island of Madagascar. It is intended for use by conservationists, botanists, and those with an interest in palms and Madagascar. Topics covered include palm habitats, natural history, the cultivation of Madagascar palms at the Royal Botanic Gardens, local uses of palms, and environmental issues surrounding the palms. Cites for each of the 171 Madagascar palms include information on distribution, habitat, local name and uses, and conservation status. 70 species that were previously unknown to science are described in this book for the first time. The book includes a taxonomic key, many color photographs and black-and-white illustrations, a glossary, bibliography, and indexes of local and scientific names.
