Dietary nutrient deficiency in small-scale farming communities in South Africa: benefits of intercropping maize (Zea mays) and beans (Phaseolus vulgaris)

, : Dietary nutrient deficiency in small-scale farming communities in South Africa: benefits of intercropping maize (Zea mays) and beans (Phaseolus vulgaris). Nutrition Research 19(4): 629-641

In field experiments in Orange Free State, South Africa, maize/Phaseolus vulgaris intercrops were evaluated with regard to yield and nutrient content. Maize SNK-2147 was grown at 2.2, 4.4 and 6.7 plants/msuperscript 2 in both monocropping and intercropping, whereas P. vulgaris PAN-127 was grown at 12.5, 8.33 and 4.17 plants/msuperscript 2 in monocropping and 6.3, 4.2 and 2.1 plants/msuperscript 2 with intercropping.
