Typically croft and small farm households in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland combine part-time agriculture with other employment. Globalization, the spread of new technologies and the changing nature of agricultural and structural policies are giving rise to considerable and accelerating change in rural areas providing both opportunities and threats to the future of crofting and small scale farming. This paper discusses the meaning of globalization.
