In situ dry matter, crude protein and fibre degradation rates of perennial forages

, : In situ dry matter, crude protein and fibre degradation rates of perennial forages. Poljoprivredna Znanstvena Smotra 62(1-2): 63-69

The effect of fibre component contents on in situ dry matter, crude protein and NDF degradability parameters of 12 forages (eight grass hays and six legume hays, harvested from March to May), were studied by fitting the degradability data with Gompertz equation and its first and second derivatives were used to calculate maximum degradation rates (MDR) and time of maximum degradation rates (TMDR). Duplicate samples were incubated in sacco in the rumens of three fistulated mature cows for 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, 48 and 72 h. Correlation coefficient between lignin content and total potential degradability of NDF was high (r= -0.97, P < 0.001), while the ADF content influenced DM and CP total potential degradability (r= -0.86 and -0.84, respectively). The MDR differed between chemical components and was generally higher for CP (from 20.56 to 71.10 g/kg-1h-1) than for DM (from 16.76 to 51.96 g/kg-1h-1) and NDF (from 14.64 to 73.00 g/kg-1h-1) at their respective harvesting dates. Lignin content was found to be well correlated with the MDR of NDF (r = -0.79, P < 0.001), while the ADF and cellulose contents were well correlated with DM (r = 0.86 and -0.73, respectively) and CP MDRs (r = -0.84 and -0.84, respectively) and CP MDRs (r= -0.84 and -0.84, respectively). The TMDR values were much shorter for DM and CP (4 h) than for NDF (from 7 to 14 h). High positive correlations were found between lignin content and the TMDR of NDF (r= 0.81, P < 0.001) and between NDF and cellulose contents and the TMDR of DM (r= 0.79, P < 0.001 in both cases), while the TMDR of CP way not significantly influenced by fibre component contents.
