Intra- and inter-tree distribution of adelgid galls on natural regeneration of Siberian spruce, Picea obovata Ledeb

, : Intra- and inter-tree distribution of adelgid galls on natural regeneration of Siberian spruce, Picea obovata Ledeb. Redia 80(0): 119-129

The vertical distribution of the galls of Adelges laricis Vallot in the crown of young spruce trees (Picea obovata) was studied across the transition zone between a meadow and a mixed riparian forest in Central Siberia (Russia). The crown damage increased from the upper to lower whorls of spruces and it was slightly correlated with the branch length (R=0.37, P<0.05). Trees near the border and separated trees on the meadow were damaged a little more than spruces on the border line and inside the forest. The total number of damaged shoots differed significantly along the transect, but without a distinct pattern. The conclusion is that the tree position may affect both the level of colonization by adelgids and the distribution pattern of galls in the crown.
