New insight into mechanisms of parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis: Role of plant sterols

, : New insight into mechanisms of parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis: Role of plant sterols. Journal of Pediatric Surgery 33(1): 1-6

Two experimental studies were used to establish a possible role for plant sterols (phytosterols) in the pathogenesis of parenteral nutrition associated cholestasis (PNAC). In study I, neonatal pigs were injected daily with plant sterols; their concentrations in serum, liver, and bile were measured during a 14-day period and serum bile acid concentrations, bile acid secretion and bile flow at the end of the 14-day period were determined.
