Effect of lactation phase on carotenoid concentration in human milk

, : Effect of lactation phase on carotenoid concentration in human milk. Vitamine und Zusatzstoffe in der Ernahrung von Mensch und Tier: 7 Symposium Jena/Thuringen, Germany, 22 und 23 September 1999: 124-133

The levels of carotenoids, vitamin A and vitamin E and cholesterol in human milk were found to decrease significantly during the course of lactation, whereas the triglyceride level showed a significant increase. The concentrations of total carotenoids in breast milk decreased from 949.3 ng/ml to 201.2 ng/ml (P<0.001). 2 different mechanisms for lipoprotein associated transfer of carotenoids might exist depending on the stage of lactation.
