, : Identification of sea water intrusion in coastal belt of Tirunelveli district. Madras Agricultural Journal 2000; 86(7/9): 513-515

Water samples collected at 2-week intervals from benchmark wells of 4 zones (<1, 1-2, 2-3 and >3 km away from the seacoast) in selected villages in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, India, were analysed for pH, electrical conductivity, and various cations and anions. The wells occurring <1 km and at a 1-2 km radius from the seacoast were affected by sea water intrusion, demonstrated by the decrease in HCO3- and Ca2+ concentrations and the increase in Cl-, SO42-, Na+ and Mg2+ concentrations.
