Quantitative ultrastructural data of secretory duct epithelial cells in Rhus toxicodendron

, : Quantitative ultrastructural data of secretory duct epithelial cells in Rhus toxicodendron. International Journal of Plant Sciences 161(4): 615-630

A quantitative analysis of the epithelial cell ultrastructure of secretory ducts in the primary phloem of Rhus toxicodendron was performed using stereological techniques. The results were compared with quantitative results of animal and human cells that produce steroids. In addition, examination of the ultrastructure of other cell types of the phloem revealed specific features of the epithelial cells and related them to the synthesis and intracellular transport of secretory products. The findings indicated that the synthesis and release of glycoproteins and terpenes occur simultaneously only during epithelial cell growth, rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi apparatus are involved in glycoprotein processing, smooth ER is responsible for terpene synthesis and intracellular transport, and peroxisomes are involved in regulation of terpene synthesis.
