The urban-rural income gap in China: implications for global food markets

, : The urban-rural income gap in China: implications for global food markets. Food security in Asia: economics and policies: 19-34

This paper deals with the link between China's rural labour migration policy and its grain policy, and the long-run implications for world food markets. The paper shows that as a result of current urban-biased policy, the gap between urban and rural incomes has widened since the early 1980s. In most rural regions, China has abundant labour that is immobile due to policy and local institutions. In some cases, farmers are forced to grow grain to ensure regional and national self-sufficiency.
