Typical-clinical signs associated with the addition of fumaric acid to milk substitutes

, : Typical-clinical signs associated with the addition of fumaric acid to milk substitutes. Tierarztliche Umschau 56(8): 411-413

A 12 year observational study in an East-Westphalian veterinary practice servicing cattle and pig farms indicated that fumaric acid, used as an acidifier in milk substitute powder and milk supplements, leads to specific clinical signs. These were chronotropic and inotropic cardiac dysrhythmias and were dependent on the dose and age of the calf. In some cases a fatal peritoneal dropsy occurred together with specific histopathological renal disturbances, mainly a non-purulent nephrosis.
