Calcium and vitamin D in osteoporosis

, : Calcium and vitamin D in osteoporosis. Rheumatic Disease Clinics of North America 27(1): 101-130

Like many other chronic diseases, osteoporosis is multifactorial in nature. It is estimated that 46 to 62% of bone mineral density (BMD) is attributable to genetic factors. Therefore, from 38 to 54% of BMD may be affected by lifestyle factors such as nutrition. A role of nutrition is to assist in the development of the largest skeleton possible during growth and to protect the skeleton against calcium withdrawal during maturity.
