Erosion and sediment transport in the basin of the Yermasoyia Reservoir, Cyprus

, : Erosion and sediment transport in the basin of the Yermasoyia Reservoir, Cyprus. IAHS-AISH Publication 278(Pages 353-358

The Yermasoyia Reservoir is located northeast of the town of Limassol, Cyprus. The basin area of the Yermasoyia River, which feeds the reservoir with water, totals 122.5 km (super 2) . This study aims to estimate the annual sediment inflow into the Yermasoyia Reservoir from its basin using a mathematical model. The whole model consists of three individual models: a rainfall-runoff model, a physically-based soil erosion model and a sediment transport model for streams. The sediment transport capacity of streamflow, which is incorporated into the sediment transport model, is calculated by the relationships of van Rijn (1984). Monthly rainfall data from three rainfall stations, and data from a meteorological station for four years (1986-1989), were available. The soil erosion estimates are compared with erosion measurement data. Additionally, the estimated values of sediment inflow into the reservoir are compared with values estimated by another model that differs from the present model only in the relationships for sediment transport capacity by streamflow (Yang & Stall, 1976).
