Iatrogenic candidal infection of a mediastinal foregut cyst following endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration

, : Iatrogenic candidal infection of a mediastinal foregut cyst following endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration. Endoscopy 34(10): 838-839

A 53-year-old woman [UK] was found to have a paratracheal mass on chest radiography. Endoscopic ultrasound was done and the mass was found to be predominantly cystic and has some echogenic material. No oesophageal candidosis was visible. She underwent trans-oesophageal puncture with a 22-gauge needle and thick, gelatinous aspirates were obtained. Culture of the aspirate grew no organisms. The patient underwent exploratory surgery and a 6-cm cystic mass was excised. The mass contained thick fluid, which on culture grew Candida albicans. Histological investigation confirmed that the lesion was an oesophageal duplication cyst.
