Identification of Arsenophonus-type bacteria from the dog tick Dermacentor variabilis

, : Identification of Arsenophonus-type bacteria from the dog tick Dermacentor variabilis. Journal of Invertebrate Pathology 83(3): 264-266

A study was conducted to examine bacteria within Dermacentor variabilis, the major vector of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in eastern North America [date not given]. D. variabilis were collected by dragging in several locations in Indiana, USA. A significant proportion of sequences obtained were highly similar to Arsenophonus, gamma -proteobacteria and Enterobacteriaceae family. Phylogenetic analysis of approximately 1349 bp of sequence showed that Dermacentor-associated Arsenophonus type 16S-rDNA sequences form a coherent group (0.7 average divergence) related to, but distinct from other Arsenophonus type microbes. Results indicate high densities of possible endosymbionts in Dermacentor populations.
