Identification of Cryptosporidium parvum 'cattle' genotype from a severe outbreak of neonatal foal diarrhoea

, : Identification of Cryptosporidium parvum 'cattle' genotype from a severe outbreak of neonatal foal diarrhoea. Veterinary Record 153(20): 628-631

A severe outbreak of diarrhoea in Thoroughbred foals accompanied by shedding of Cryptosporidium-like structures in the faeces of the affected animals was investigated. This was the first report of an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis in foals, which incorporated epidemiological, clinical, pathological data, as well as genetic characterization of the outbreak isolates. The outbreak in a commercial Thoroughbred broodmare farm in the Waikato region of New Zealand occurred in 2002.
