Since 1995, mid-rib rot has been identified on lettuce in the province of West-Vlaanderen in Belgium. The causal organism was isolated and identified as Pseudomonas spp. P. P. cichorii was associated with disease type 1 and P. marginalis or P. fluorescens was associated with type 2.
