Safeguarding the needs of locally managed irrigation in the water scarce Lerma-Chapala River Basin, Mexico

, : Safeguarding the needs of locally managed irrigation in the water scarce Lerma-Chapala River Basin, Mexico. Food production, poverty alleviation and environmental challenges as influenced by limited water resources and population growth Volume 1A 18th International Congress on Irrigation and Drainage, Montreal, Canada, 2002: 1-15

Water resources in the Lerma-Chapala Basin of Central Mexico are over-committed. Total water depletion exceeds annual renewable water by 9% on average. The situation in the basin has been developing over the last 20 years with increasing population and economic development that have driven exploitation of water resources for irrigated agriculture, urbanisation and industrialisation.
