Screening of subclinical mastitis by N-acetyl- beta -D-glucosaminidase test

, : Screening of subclinical mastitis by N-acetyl- beta -D-glucosaminidase test. Indian Journal of Veterinary Medicine 20(2): 81

Milk samples from 1376 quarters from control cows, 1104 quarters from 276 cows with subclinical mastitis and 232 quarters from cows under farm conditions in Tamil Nadu, India were subjected to the N-acetyl- beta -D-glucosaminidase (NAGase) test and bacterial culture It was shown that 588 of 1336 quarter samples (44.0%) were positive for Staphylococcus spp. (363), Streptococcus spp. (148), Escherichia coli (34), Klebsiella spp. (16), Enterobacter spp. (9), Proteus spp. (6) and Pseudomonas spp. (12). The mean NAGase activity of milk from healthy cows was 5.4+or-0.28 nmol/min/ml while values for milk having Gram positive cocci, coliforms and Pseudomonas were 26.75+or-0.36, 16.36+or-0.47 and 13.58+or-0.73 nmol/min/ml, respectively. NAGase activities in the Staphylococcus and Streptococcus-infected milk samples were 28.27+or-0.46 and 23+or-0.28 nmol/min/ml, respectively. It is concluded that NAGase activity is useful in the identification of these mastitis pathogens.
