Spectrum of myelopathies in HIV seropositive South African patients


, : Spectrum of myelopathies in HIV seropositive South African patients. Neurology 57(2): 348-351

A prospective study was conducted over an 18-month period to determine the cause of myelopathies in 33 HIV seropositive individuals (13 men and 20 women) in Kwazulu/Natal, South Africa. Results revealed that 12 of the patients had coinfection with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I, 6 had tuberculosis, 3 had zoster myelitis, and 2 each had herpes simplex, syphilis and bilharziasis Only one case of vacuolar myelopathy was identified.
