Amanita regalis (Fr.) Michael, the Royal fly agaric, is a rare species that the German Mycological Society has nominated "Mushroom of the Year 2000". The scarce literature on A. regalis is reviewed in some detail. In addition, a number of poisoning cases attributed to this mushroom in old and modem literature are reviewed and discussed.
