Co-dried sardine silage as an ingredient in tilapia, Oreochromis aureus, diets

, : Co-dried sardine silage as an ingredient in tilapia, Oreochromis aureus, diets. Journal of Aquaculture in the Tropics 18(3): 257-264, August

Growth and feed efficiency were determined for tilapia, Oreochromis aureus, fingerlings fed diets containing sardine silage co-dried with wheat bran (3:1). Five isonitrogenous, isocaloric diets were formulated in which fish meal was replaced by co-dried silage (C-DS). The diets were each fed to triplicate groups of 15 juvenile tilapia for 10 weeks. Diets containing CD-S were readily consumed by all treatment groups, and there were no significant differences in the initial and final mean weights for those treatment groups fed diets containing fish meal and those containing C-DS at 100, 200 and 300 g kg-1 inclusion levels. Significantly lower weight gain (P<0.05), and higher feed conversion ratios (P<0.05) were recorded in the treatment group fed a diet containing 400 g kg-1 CD-S. No significant differences between the treatment groups were found in the proximate content of whole carcasses. The results showed that co-dried sardine silage could be included in dry diets for juvenile tilapia, up to an inclusion level of 300 g kg-1, without impairing growth or feed conversion efficiency.
