Influence of intercrops on weed infestation of cover crops on light soil

, : Influence of intercrops on weed infestation of cover crops on light soil. Annales Universitatis Mariae Curie Skodowska Sectio E, Agricultura 58: 53-67

A field experiment was conducted during 1993-1996 at the Agricultural Experimental Station of Bezek, Lublin, Poland on good rye complex to study the effects of cover crops, i.e. winter rye Dankowskie Zlote (240 plants per m2), winter triticale Presto (350 plants per m2), spring barley Rudzik (230 plants per m2) and oat Dragon (400 plants per m2), and of intercrops, i.e. serradella (Ornithopus compressus) Bydgoska (40 kg ha-1), white clover Podkowa (10 kg ha-1), red clover Hruszowska (20 kg ha-1), hop trefoil Renata (15 kg ha-1), white melilot Selgo (20 kg ha-1), and Dutch ryegrass Motycki (40 kg ha-1), on weed infestation. Before harvesting of cover crops, weed infestation was evaluated using the square-frame method. Weed species composition and dry matter of aboveground parts of weeds were also estimated. Winter rye was the most effective in the reduction of the number and mass of weeds. The highest total number and dry matter of weeds was recorded for the canopy of spring barley. The number and mass of weeds in cereals were not significantly reduced by the undersown crops. Winter rye and oats among the cover crops, and red clover and ryegrass among the intercrops were most efficient in the reduction of weed species composition. The following species of weeds dominated in the canopy of intercrops and cover crops: Chenopodium album, Agropyron repens Matricaria maritima and Echinochloa crus-galli. C. album and E. crus-galli predominated in the canopy of spring cereals, whereas A. repens and M. maritima predominated in the canopy of winter cereals.
