Application of an intravaginal progesterone device for the oestrus and ovulation synchronization of Thoroughbred mares

, : Application of an intravaginal progesterone device for the oestrus and ovulation synchronization of Thoroughbred mares. Revista Cientifica, Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias, Universidad del Zulia 16(1): 62-66

Intravaginal devices (ID) impregnated with progesterone were used to determinate the time between the placement of ID and the moment when the preovulatory follicle reached more than 35 mm O (FPO>35 mm), and the time from this moment until ovulation in two groups, with 30 Thoroughbred mares selected at random: Group 1 (G1, n=15), intravaginal devices with 1.38 g of progesterone together with 25 mg intramuscularly (i.m.) of estradiol benzoate (EB) and Group 2 (G2, n=15), ID with 1.0 g of progesterone together with 25 mg i.m. of EB. Ultrasonography was carried out from the 4th day after the insertion of the ID until the POF>35 mm, withdrawal was done at that moment and the mares were presented to a teaser for oestrus detection and the time of ovulation was controlled by means of ultrasonography. The onset of oestrus signs was analysed with the Fisher's test, time from ID insert until FPO>35 mm and ovulation were analysed with Mann Whitney's test. The exhibition of oestrus signs was G1, 12 mares (80.00%) and G2, 14 mares (93.33%). The average between insertion of ID until FPO>35 mm and ovulation was G1, 150+or-19 and 96+or-34 h and G2, 149+or-19 and 79+or-24 h, respectively. In conclusion, it is possible to withdraw the ID at days 6-7, and the content of progesterone in the ID has no effect on oestrus, time from ID insert until FPO>35 mm and ovulation (P>0.05) in mares.
