Cool and wet soils at the time of soyabean (Glycine max) planting in the northern Great Plains may reduce early crop growth and retard nitrogen (N) fixation. Application of N as a starter fertilizer may increase the initial growth of soyabean, but may also negatively impact N fixation when environmental conditions improve. The effects of low rates of N on soyabean N fixation and growth was determined in a field experiment conducted in South Dakota, USA during 2000-02.
