A brief cytotaxonomic survey of singapore ferns

, : A brief cytotaxonomic survey of singapore ferns. Journal of the Singapore National Academy of Science 14: 53-64

The tropical ferns are unique in their reproduction and distribution. Hardly any beginning has been made in understanding the cytological basis of reproduction including their chromosome numbers and the ploidy levels. The present paper is the first in a series on local ferns providing the data on both the above aspects. The chromosome numbers of about 50 local fern species are determined, many of them for the first time at the level of the genus and species. Contrary to some of the earlier expectations and hypothesis, the present report confirms that majority of the Malayan ferns are at the diploid level unlike their polyploid counterparts in the tropical Africa and Jamaica.
