A chemical study of virginia tobacco flavor nicotiana tabacum part 1 isolation and synthesis of 2 bi cyclo damascenones

, : A chemical study of virginia tobacco flavor nicotiana tabacum part 1 isolation and synthesis of 2 bi cyclo damascenones. Helvetica Chimica Acta 59(6): 1938-1943

Aged 'Virginia' tobacco was steam-distilled and the resulting condensate investigated by chromatographic methods. This allowed identification of the bicyclodamascenones A and B in a small subfraction from this condensate. Both these ketones, which are novel tobacco constituents, were also synthesized and a possible mechanism was proposed for their formation by way of acid-catalyzed cyclization of .beta.-damascenone.
