The effect of the Halothane-type of the sow on its lifetime prolificacy was studied on five farms. One-hundred and seventy Herdbook sows were typed according to the Halothane results of their progenies. The means and standard deviations of litter size at birth, litter size at weaning and number of litters per lifetime were 10.14 .+-. 1.33, 9.41 .+-. 1.28 and 4.85 .+-. 2.57, respectively. The farms had highly significant effects on all three traits. The Halothane-type influenced the number of litters produced per lifetime significantly. The means of the most extreme farms differed 0.95, 1.62 and 3.15 for litter size born, number of piglets reared and number of litters produced per lifetime, respectively. Halothane-negative sows produced 1.02 (P .ltoreq. 0.05) more litters than Halothane-positive sows.
