A revision of australopithecine body sizes

, : A revision of australopithecine body sizes. Evolutionary Theory 2(2): 65-94

When Australopithecus dentitions are divided into A. africanus and A. robustus on morphological grounds alone it is found that both species are found in each of the major South African sites. There is a great sexual dimorphism in both species with a relative scarcity of the big male A. africanus and the small female A. robustus. Skulls and jaws of young male A. africanus and female A. robustus have previously been misidentified as early genus Homo. With site allocation no longer valid, a new method of identifying postcranial remains shows that A. africanus averages much larger than A. robustus. With new ratios of tooth to body size the greater degree of morphological molarization in A. robustus now makes sense.
