Adsorption of phosphoserine onto hydroxyapatite and its inhibitory activity on crystal growth

, : Adsorption of phosphoserine onto hydroxyapatite and its inhibitory activity on crystal growth. Journal of Colloid & Interface Science 106(1): 110-121

Adsorption isotherms ( C) of o-phospho-L-serine onto various synthetic hydroxyapatites (HA) were adequately described by a Langmuirian model. Variation of specific surface areas by a factor of 4 (10.6 vs 46.4 m2/g) did not affect significantly the maximum number of adsorption sites (.mu.mol/m2) on the adsorbents. Inhibitory activity of phosphoserine on seeded HA crystal growth was studied using supersaturated solutions with respect to HA and containing phosphoserine in the range of 2.5 .times. 10-5 to 7.5 .times. 10-4 M. Experiments were conducted to assess the effect of the phosphoserine-Ca ion pair on the kinetics of precipitation. Apparently, the observed crystal growth inhibition can be interpreted in terms of the fractional coverage of specific adsorption sites; maximum surface area covered was estimated to be about 20% of the total surface area of the adsorbent. The implications of the results are discussed in light of the adsorption behavior of some phosphorylated salivary proteins [human].
