An experimental study on the relationship between the degree of locus of control and controllability of stress

, : An experimental study on the relationship between the degree of locus of control and controllability of stress. Journal of Liberal Arts & Sciences Sapporo Medical College 22: 31-36

In a 2 .times. 2 factorial experiment, 20 internal and 20 external locus of control subjects underwent an aversive shock avoidance procedure. Half of the subjects were able to avoid shock by not making mistakes on the task, while the remaining subjects could not avoid shock. A yoked control design was used to ensure that shocks were delivered to avoidance and nonavoidance subjects on the same schedule. All subjects initially showed a rapid increase in systolic blood pressure and heart rate as compared with the baseline. These changes were sustained in avoidance subjects during experimental trials, but diminished in nonavoidance subjects at a later stage of the experiment. While the above results showed a significant effect of controllability on behavioral stress, the effect of internal-external locus of control on behavioral stress was not detected in this study.
