Antigenic hybrids of influenza a viruses with surface antigens to order

, : Antigenic hybrids of influenza a viruses with surface antigens to order. Virology 42(3): 633-642

Stable antigenic hybrids between mammalian and avian strains of influenza A viruses with the hemagglutinin from one parent and the neuraminidase antigen from the other parent can be made to order in the allantois-on-shell system. Their isolation was made possible by the use of specific antisera to the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase antigens of the parental viruses. The implications of antigenic hybrids in the origin of pandemic strains and the uses of laboratory hybrids in the study of antigenic variation in influenza are discussed.
