Bacterial filamentation and in vivo efficacy: a comparison of several cephalosporins

, : Bacterial filamentation and in vivo efficacy: a comparison of several cephalosporins. Journal of Antimicrobial ChemoTherapy 7(1): 57-63

The chemotherapeutic properties of 6 commercially available cephalosporins were evaluated. The major properties which contribute to successful therapy, i.e., MIC [minimum inhibitory concentrations] pharmacokinetics and in vivo rate of kill were similar for all compounds, and consequently, they all had similar ED50 values. The cephalosporins differed markedly in their abilities to induce filamentous forms at the site of infection. Filamentation is apparently not a determining factor in therapeutic efficacy.
