Behavioral ecology of the african armyworm spodoptera exempta lepidoptera noctuidae evidence of successive generations from kenya

, : Behavioral ecology of the african armyworm spodoptera exempta lepidoptera noctuidae evidence of successive generations from kenya. Bulletin of Entomological Research 69(2): 275-282

S. exempta (Wlk.) is predominantly a migrant species, but in southern Africa, it can breed through several successive generations in 1 area. Similar observations were made for the 1st time in East Africa. Studies on populations in the Lambwe Valley in western Kenya revealed that during 2 yr when the populations were monitored and 1 yr when information was available there were 3 generations each year during the period corresponding with the long rainy season. The Lambwe Valley presents a suitable habitat for the species to sustain its population and probably forms a breeding area for moths that might undergo large-scale migration.
