Behavioral inhibition in young children

, : Behavioral inhibition in young children. Child Development 55(3): 1005-1019

The behavior of 21-mo.-old children was observed in the laboratory on 2 occasions in a series of situations designed to identify individual differences in behavioral inhibition to the unfamiliar. Heart rate and respiration in response to information varying in familiarity were quantified in a different laboratory. The tendency to be consistently inhibited or uninhibited in behavior was stable across the 2 sessions, and extremely inhibited children had significantly higher heart rates to all information and less variable heart rates to the less familiar information. A follow-up study 10 mo. later revealed moderate stability of the behavioral tendency toward inhibition vs. lack of inhibition. Parental report data on the inhibition dimension were moderately correlated with the behavioral observations.
