Changes in the growth of egg length and egg width with age of pullets

, : Changes in the growth of egg length and egg width with age of pullets. Memoirs of the Faculty of Agriculture Hokkaido University 14(3): 210-217

Relative growth of egg length, egg width and egg weight were studied in pullets from 19 to 61 weeks of age. The relative growth was estimated from the growth coefficient, b, in the allometric equation (Y = AXb). The growth coefficient of egg width relative to egg weight was significantly larger than egg length to egg weight. Two phases were clearly indicated in the growth pattern for egg width relative to egg length. The growth coefficient was significantly greater than 1.0 for the period from 19 to 28 wk of age (1.309), indicating a higher growth rate for egg width than for egg length. The coefficient was 0.984 for the period after 29 wk of age, not significantly different from 1.0. Positive allometry of egg width to length related well to a marked increase in egg production. The pattern of relative growth of width to length was directly reflected in changes in the shape index, which continued to increase from the 1st egg to the peak of egg production and remained constant after that. The rapid growth of egg width in 1st phase might be influenced by gonadotrophic hormones.
