Colony foundation and pleometrosis in camponotus hymenoptera formicidae

, : Colony foundation and pleometrosis in camponotus hymenoptera formicidae. Pan-Pacific Entomologist 55(2): 81-89

Colony foundation behavior of reproductive female ants of 7 Camponotus spp. [C. vicinus Mayr, C. (Tanaemyrmex) festinatus (Buckley), C. (Camponotus) modoc Wheeler, C. (C.) laevigatus F. Smith, C. (Myrmentoma) Clarithorax Emergy, C. (M.) rasilis Wheeler, and C. (M.) planatus Roger] is described, under laboratory conditions. Females required 48-74 days to rear the 1st worker brood to maturity. The development of this brood was uninterrupted. The effect of an initial honeywater feeding on brood size and development time was tested. Brood development was not accelerated and brood size was not increased by this treatment. Five female pairs of C. vicinus cooperated and jointly founded colonies; in these cases, the size of the 1st brood was significantly increased, although the development time was not appreciably shortened. The significance of pleometrotic colony foundation is discussed.
