Compensation by aegilops umbellulata for the 3d suppressor of homoeologous pairing in triticum aestivum

, : Compensation by aegilops umbellulata for the 3d suppressor of homoeologous pairing in triticum aestivum. Zeitschrift fuer Pflanzenzuechtung 86(4): 265-271

Parts of the genetic system controlling suppression of homeologous chromosome pairing in the cultivated hexaploid wheat arose already in the diploid wheat progenitors; evidently, some of these genes are older than the origin of polyploid wheat. To trace back the suppressor effect located on wheat chromosome 3D, haploid hybrids were investigated containing the 3 wheat genomes A, B and D with and without chromosome 3D, respectively, together with 1 genome of A. umbellulata. Chiasma frequencies were compared in metaphase I of PMC [pollen mother cells] in progenies of crosses with 3 different wheat females, i.e., F1 of synthetic wheat .times. 'Chinese Spring' mono 3D (experiment 1), 'Chinese Spring' mono 3D as such (experiment 2), and 'Chinese Spring' nulli 3D-tetra 3B (experiment 3), respectively. No major differences were found between plants from the same cross irrespective of the presence or absence of wheat chromosome 3D. Thus, both of the used biotypes of A. umbellulata carry a gene (or genes) able to compensate for the absence of 3D. By way of comparison, A. sharonensis did substitute for the 3D suppressor of homeologous pairing. The cytogenetic relationships between A. umbellulata and wheat known so far are summarized.
