, : Contribution to some radiobiological aspects of the investigation of chemical radiosensitizers of hypoxic cells 3. radiosensitizing action of metronidazole on lethality using the model of ischemic bone marrow in rats. Radiobiologia Radiotherapia 26(3): 331-337

On an experimental model of ischemic bone marrow the radiosensitizing effect of metronidazole (Entizol, Polfa, PLR) on the lethality of whole body irradiated rats protected by abdomen compression during irradiation was tested. The compression was performed by inflatable rubber-cuff at the overpressure of 20 kPa [kilopascals] and it gave the rats a protection corresponding to DRF = 2.06. The administration of metronidazole in the dose of 600 mg .cntdot. kg-1 in aqueous solution (2 ml) by means of a gastric pipette 80 min before the beginning of irradiation has led in protected rats to a decrease of DRF to 1.47 which agrees with ER (enhancement ratio) = 1.40. In unprotected rats the metronidazole did not influence radiation lethality. Neither did it influence a prolongation of the mean lethality time which appeared in rats protected by abdomenal compression.
