An equivalent of 5 t[tons]/ha of homogenously 14C-labeled rice straw was incorporated in the field at depths of 0-5, 5-10, 10-15 and 15-20 cm. The soil, Andaqueptic haplaquoll, was submerged constantly. In all treatments, topsoil above the dense layer was contaminated by water soluble labeled C compounds shortly after incorporation. The gaseous losses labeled C were primarily methane. Average over the treatments, the half life of incorporated straw in the top 20 cm of the soil was 43 days; a decomposition pattern similar to data collected in tropical uplands. The recovery of 17-28% of 14C after 1 yr, depending on treatment, indicates that decomposition slows as incorporation depth increases. Straw decomposed faster in the puddled layer than in the deeper unpuddled layer.
