Description of a new species of the barbine genus barbodes from china cypriniformes cyprinides

, : Description of a new species of the barbine genus barbodes from china cypriniformes cyprinides. Acta Zootaxonomica Sinica 11(1): 108-110

Holotype: No. 78 .times. 6242, total length 140 mm, standard length 116 mm; paratype; No. 78 .times. 6274, total length 98.5 mm; collected respectively from Nanming River and Malin River, Guizhou; kept in the Institute of Hydrobiology, Academia Sinica. Paratypes: No. 60796-60801, 6 specimens, total length 45-82 mm, standard length 35-69mm; collected from Guizhou and kept in the Institute of Zoology, Academia Sinica. Descriptions: D. 3,8-9; A. 3,5; P. 1,12-13; V. 1,8. Gill-rakers 8-14. Ph. Teeth 2.3.5-5.3.2. Scales in lateral line 38-42, predorsal 12-17, circumpeduncular 14-16. Vertebrae 4 + 34-36. Depth in standard length 3.5-4.3 (4.0), head 4.2-4.8 (4.5), length of caudal peduncle 5.3-7.0(6.0), its depth 7.7-9.7(8.8). Snout in head 2.4-4.0 (3.0), eye 4.0-6.6(5.4), interorbital space 1.9-2.5(2.1). Depth of caudal peduncle in its length 1.3-1.9(1.5). This new species is similar to members of genus Sinilabeo in having a shallow depression between the upper lip and the upper jaw but should be put in the genus Barbodes because of its simple mouth construction, undifferentiated lip and jaw, two pairs of developed barbels, interrupted postlabial groove, less gill-rakers, etc. From its congeners the shallow depression between the upper lip and the upper jaw and the broad and flattened head are diagnostic.
