Direct and indirect selection for 56 day weight in mice

, : Direct and indirect selection for 56 day weight in mice. Zeitschrift fuer Tierzuechtung und Zuechtungsbiologie 101(4): 275-279

In 2 stocks of mice, the direct response of 56-day body wt gain to selection was compared to the correlated response of this trait to selection for postweaning gain (between 21 and 42 days of age). In both stocks, the correlated response surpassed the direct response. Genetic parameters estimated from these stocks did not fulfill requirements, in Falconer's formula for indirect selection, for indirect selection to surpass direct selection. The probable reasons for this descrepancy were invalid parameter estimates due to violation of assumptions or to the large standard errors.
