Effect of pyruvate on growth of thiobacillus acidophilus

, : Effect of pyruvate on growth of thiobacillus acidophilus. Revue Canadienne de Biologie 40(2): 167-172

Growth of T. acidophilus in the absence and presence of pyruvate was demonstrated in autotrophic and heterotrophic culture. Neither autotrophic nor heterotrophic growth was inhibited by 10-4 M pyruvate. In autotrophic culture with 10-3 M pyruvate, the pH of the medium increased, causing cessation of growth but not metabolic activity; after a favorable pH was attained, growth continued. Higher concentrations of pyruvate inhibited autotrophic growth. In heterotrophic culture, concentrations of 10-3 M pyruvate and higher inhibited growth. The removal of pyruvate from the medium was observed during autotrophic and heterotrophic growth.
