Effect of short term administration of carlsbad mineral water on the function and composition of damaged rat liver

, : Effect of short term administration of carlsbad mineral water on the function and composition of damaged rat liver. Balneologia Bohemica 10(2): 33-44

The effect of short-term administration of Carlsbad mineral water on biochemical and morphological changes in rats damaged by a single dose of CCl4 (6-day experiment), by adminstering CCl4 twice (within 72 h, 5-day experiment) and by partial hepatectomy (2-wk observation) was studied. Mineral elements in the liver, serum, and, the histological appearance of the liver, and in hepatectomized rats the regenerative activity of hepatic tissue were studied by assessing DNA synthesis, using [14C] thymidine and by estimating the DNA content. In rats with chemical liver damage to whom Carlsbad mineral water was administered an increased Na concentration in hepatic tissue was recorded, as compared with controls who drank tap water under otherwise equal conditions. In rats after 65-70% hepatectomy the DNA synthesis as well as the DNA content were increased in the group given Carlsbad mineral water. The experiments did not prove a noxious effect of Carlsbad mineral water.
